Central is not as central as its name suggests, for all that it connects directly to Copernicus with an A-scale reservoir: since Copernicus was so thoroughly destroyed, the Central reservoir is always in danger of emptying itself with great force, straight down the giant tunnel. It’s not happened yet, but Centralians take the threat very seriously, so travel to Central is either over the surface of the Moon from Mare Nubium to Ptolemaeus or Alphonsus, two large settlements along the north-south spur directly off the Central reservoir, or alternately from Archimedes to Rima Hadley if you’re coming from The Loop. Central also connects to Gemma Frisius via Alacensis, and Sea of Serenity to Poseidon, making it the only way to get from West Moon to Crisium and Nectaris.
Every one of these connections is over the surface of the Moon, due to wartime destruction of major reservoir areas. It’s easier to fly the roughly 200 miles from one settlement to another, rather than rebuild the titanic areas that were once huge tunnels beneath the surface of the Moon, and are now craters and vacuum. Central is good at local-route Moon spaceships, and 200 miles under lunar gravity isn’t that much of a trip.
Between Tranquility and Copernicus is a large area of backbone that is pressurized and has air: furries south of Central Bay were likewise able to respond to depressurization, and rebuild. The actual area of backbone is forbidden to settlement, as it will explosively decompress if there’s a breach such as a meteorite strike or moonquake, violently blowing clear any obstructions like a giant air cannon. However, it’s a vital reservoir. There are two extensions north of the backbone, Rima Hadley and Serenity: the former is a spaceport that’s now useless, and the latter is a farm like Fecunditatis. South of the backbone is the Central line, running through four settlements before it reaches smaller tunnels and places. Central takes its position very seriously and considers itself the furry Switzerland, refusing to take sides or positions. They are the peacekeepers of the Moon, and as long as surface travel’s limited to 200 miles or so, they control passage between The West and Crisium. They also control the largest working air reservoir on the East Face of the Moon. Access to Crisium is from Serenity to Poseidon, including much risky travel through open backbone: if it leaks, you’re done, blown away. Access to Nectaris is from Aliacensis to Gemma Frisius. Access to The Loop is from Rima Hadley to Archimedes, including risky travel through open backbone.
